As a pre-law student with aspirations of pursuing a career in corporate law, I've come to realize that the journey to finding the right industry isn't always a straight path. Initially, my interests were focused primarily on law, but as I explored more, I found myself drawn to the intersection of business and law. My ultimate goal is to practice corporate law, which made me curious about the skills I'd need to develop along the way.

My Experience

Through my research and experiences, I discovered consulting. What drew me to this field is how it perfectly complements the skill set I aim to build in law school—problem-solving, strategic thinking, and navigating business challenges. Be Open to Exploration

It’s important to start with a broad focus and give yourself permission to explore different areas. I initially thought I would strictly pursue law, but by allowing myself to explore consulting, I found a career path that aligns well with my long-term aspirations. Sometimes, the industry you’re meant to be in isn’t what you originally planned!

Research the Field

Once you have a few industries in mind, dive deep into research. Understand what roles and skills are in demand, and how they overlap with your personal interests and career goals. I spent time reading about corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, and consulting to uncover the connections and opportunities between these fields.

Network & Ask Questions

Speaking to professionals who are already in the field is invaluable. I recommend conducting informational interviews, attending industry events, or even engaging in casual coffee chats. These conversations helped me gain insider perspectives and solidified my decision to explore consulting.

Self Reflection

After gathering information and talking to others, take time to reflect on your personal goals, strengths, and interests. What motivates you? What do you want out of your career? I realized that my analytical skills, combined with my interest in corporate structures, made consulting a natural fit alongside my legal aspirations.

Take Action

Once you've done your research and reflected on your interests, it's time to act. Apply for internships, join industry-related student organizations, or participate in relevant projects. Taking tangible steps will help confirm whether you're on the right path or if adjustments are needed. My internships and conversations with professionals were key in helping me decide where I wanted to focus my career.
